Fly Mama, 2016

Description

When my mother Latifah Nankivell passed away at the end of 2012, I could feel her mother, her mother’s mother, and her mother… stretching back through space and time. This painting is my first attempt at explaining that feeling, and our connection to our ancestors. She has wings because of the link with butterflies, which I begun painting in the time following my mum’s death. Butterflies are symbolic of spirituality, and of transformation.
