Big Hair Butterflies, 2014

Description

One of a series of portraits inspired by sketches of women in and around South Wales. Drawing on beaches and in cafes, I created a series of paintings based on the sketches, using mixed media to create depth to the outlines before spraypainting with colour and adding butterflies. Her hair is the focus, important in many cultures for spiritual well-being, health and energy, while butterflies are symbolic of transformation.

I sign my work ‘Unity’ a name I also use when dancing – unity of self, and my hope for the world around me.
